Doug’s Varin is a rare strain that Dougie’s Farm unintentionally discovered. It is high in the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), hence the name. Doug grew seeds from what he believed to be Harlequin, so he is the only one who is aware of its genetic origins. Online reports claim that the strain has an earthy, pine scent and a woody, citrus taste. For its high concentrations of the cannabinoid THCV, which preliminary studies suggest has energizing and appetite-suppressing properties, Doug’s Varin is prized. Due to its rarity, little is known about how to grow it; all that is known is that Doug’s Varin grows similarly to other Sativa plants, according to Dougie’s Farm. Given that, it ought to thrive in a warm, dry environment both inside and outside. In eight to nine weeks, it should flower, and by late October, it should be ready for harvest. The resulting buds have brownish yellow pistils and gleaming trichomes, and they are bright green in color.

Exodus Cheese and Space Queen were crossed to create the legendary breeder Subcool’s Dairy Queen. It has a similar, but very strong, fruity cheese flavor and aroma. According to Renegade Roots, lab tests typically found 20% THC. Both indoors and outdoors, Dairy Queen grows easily, producing short, bushy plants that bloom in about eight weeks. Breeders advise growers to use odor-masking technology because Dairy Queen’s strong, funky odors make discretion challenging. With tightly packed, light- and dark-green buds that have a few orange pistils and a thick layer of resinous trichomes, Dairy Queen forms a medium-sized central cola. Medium yields are reported by Subcool for this cultivar.

A Sativa landrace cultivar called Colombian Gold was developed in Colombia’s Santa Marta Mountains. Colombian Gold, one of the market’s most reliable cannabis strains, developed through generations of inbreeding by local growers. Despite being less well-known than its cousin, Acapulco Gold, Colombian Gold has still made its mark on the cannabis industry. In the 1960s, Sam the Skunkman used it as one half of his Skunk #1 creation, and over the following few decades, it has been used for a variety of hybrids. The resulting green and orange buds have an earthy, fresh pine scent that permeates every nook and cranny of the space. Colombian Gold, a genuine landrace Sativa, grows tall, branchy plants that bloom indoors in 75–90 days. However, a grower with average experience can coax a yield of up to 600 grams per square meter in November from an outdoor garden in the Northern Hemisphere and a May harvest from an outdoor garden in the Southern Hemisphere.

Numerous Colombian strains have trichome-covered leaves that are spicy green with orange and red coloring. According to online sources, these strains smell like skunk and earthy pine, traits Colombian landraces passed on to their offspring like Haze and Skunk #1. The Santa Marta Mountains and the storied Tierradentro region of Colombia are home to indigenous Colombian landrace strains. Colombian landraces primarily exhibit sativa characteristics, with lengthy flowering times and thin, long fan leaves, including Colombian Gold and Punto Rojo, Spanish for “Red Dot,” and other well-known cultivars. Colombian landrace plants yield heavily when grown outdoors, where they can reach heights of up to 12 feet and reach their best growth rates by mid-November. Indoor gardens require additional height management techniques and bloom in 75 to 90 days. According to online reports, Colombian landraces have trouble reproducing the original flavors and terpenoids when grown in conditions that are very different from those found in the country’s mountains. Available only in seed form
